Why we created the Cooperative.
Today men and women at 65 years of age are still
vital, strong, capable people. Are they still mentally capable?
The science certainly says so ... For example:
Dr.
Hyman of Mass General Hospital found no appreciable neuronal loss from
cerebral cortex of people in a 60-90 year group who retained mental
clarity. In a healthy brain, loss of brain cells is modest and some
people even increase in mental abilities in later years.
Dr. Morris from
Washington University came to approximately similar conclusions.
Thus it appears that the intellectual functions do
not significantly decline in a healthy aging brain.
We view retired scientists as an
under-appreciated resource in society and wanted to centralize
information regarding this important group of individuals.
